Life skills are those valuable lessons that your kids will use throughout their life and go hand in hand with their development. But, in today’s fast-paced world, there is so much for children to learn in today’s tech world that it has become all too easy for them to miss out on practical life skills.

Instead of focusing on developing a path for their future, you should focus on preparing them for the path. You can do this by imparting your life experiences, being honest with them, and teaching them skills necessary for their overall growth. Here is a list of some life skills that you can teach your child in their growth years.

Decision-Making

Education, career, partners, friends, business, there are so many crucial decisions we need to make in our lives. Teach your child in small and simple ways how to make wise decisions at an early age. You can begin by asking them to choose between 2 games, types of clothes, different food items, etc. After this, the child will understand the consequences that each decision has. The ability to make good decisions is a life skill every child should begin learning at a young age!

Health & Hygiene

Health and hygiene is an essential aspect of our lives that needs to be taken care of, more importantly in the case of children. When your child is an infant, you try your best to keep your baby healthy and their surroundings hygienic. But as your child grows, you should teach them to carry this out themselves.

In our day-to-day shuffle, we always tell our kids to take a bath, brush their teeth, wash their hands and change their clothes. Explain to them why health and hygiene are always going to be crucial parts of their lives.

Management of Time

Every human knows how crucial time management is to keep our lives on track. But it’s also essential for kids to start learning time management lessons at an early age.

You’re probably wondering how. You can do this by making your kid claim responsibility for their time.

Money Management

Managing money is a crucial part of every individual’s life. Hence it is essential to teach your child how to manage their money. This includes understanding how to spend and save money and the responsible ways to handle debt and investment for future goals.

Having conversations with kids about money is one of the most significant ways for kids to learn. When they grow a bit older, letting them manage money independently provides hands-on education and helps them understand how finance works.

Basic Cooking

Invite your child to make small meals, assign them helping jobs to do like handling ingredients or clean the table while cooking. Teach them how to prepare their own peanut butter and jam sandwiches, teach them how to butter the toasts, and so on. You will need to stay calm when the flour spills, jars break, or eggshells fly.

Cleaning

Getting kids involved in cleaning activities is hard! Start by teaching them small things like keeping their bedroom clean, folding their blankets, making their bed, etc.

You can also assign them household chores like dusting the tables one day and setting the following table.

Shopping

“I want it! I want it!” We are sure you have heard this when your child spots a toy, a candy or a T-shirt, or just about anything else you can think of that children think they’ve got to have right now? When we grow up, we understand the value of the dollar and the importance of comparison shopping.

Tell them why you have to choose appropriate budget options sometimes. This kind of budget training develops a habit in your child to know the value of money and not waste it.

Moral Values

As a parent, you have many responsibilities for the promising future of the life you’ve brought into the world. Not just physical, but every aspect of your child’s spiritual, social, psychological, and emotional state is essential. You also have to ensure they grow to be a good citizen who contributes positively to the community.

Most parents live under a misconception that moral values are to be taught at a very later stage in life. Whereas in reality, it is vital to instill moral values for kids at an early age.

Self Defence

We are sure that all of you will agree that safety is of utmost importance in today’s world, and developing self-defense makes them independent and more confident. Basic self-defense must be taught, be it for your son or your daughter.

Resilience and adaptability

Empower your child to solve problems independently so that they are ready to face challenges when they appear. They should learn resilience to adapt to different environments and circumstances.

Ensure you have an open communication channel with your child to understand what they are going through and help them out.

Environmental Consciousness

Saving the environment is incredibly important, and the sooner your child learns it, the better.

Teach your kid why it is necessary to preserve the environment. By making small lifestyle changes at home itself, you can play your part in saving the planet. Tell them to practice eco-friendly methods in everything they do and set an example by following it yourself.

Bottom Line

By the time your child is seven or eight, they’ve probably acquired a personality, and this kind of life skill development enhances positive personality traits.

At this age, they should be independent in the way they function inside the house. Developing life skills is significant, so your child has a brief idea of what they want to do in their life and essentially keeps in mind the kind of person they want to be.

With the technological revolution, social media platforms have become an integral part of our society. Millions of new users are joining social media every month, and the impact of social media on teenagers is very aggressive.

According to research, 63% of teenagers admit to using social media every day, out of which 45% use the internet almost constantly.

Just like every technological innovation, social media can be both a boon and a curse. Social media platforms provide a wide array of advantages which include gathering valuable information from educational media, building social relationships, sharing creative ideas with friends, and keeping themselves updated about current affairs.

When used correctly, social media can be a blessing for today’s generation. But, unfortunately not everyone uses social media in the correct way, due to which the adverse effects overpower the positive ones.

In this article, we have mentioned how increased dependence on social media can negatively affect the lives of teenagers & how parents can minimize these negative impacts.

Impact of Social Media On Teenagers

Increased Reliance on Indirect Communication

Earlier, teenagers used to spend their free time in the company of their friends at malls, parks, or sports arenas. By doing so, they are exposed to opportunities where they can try out skills, make new friends, and gain tons of knowledge with real-time interactions.

With increased reliance on indirect communication, today’s generation is missing out on face-to-face interactions and new real-time interaction opportunities, which can help them develop good communication and public speaking skills.

Moreover, the indirect nature of communication creates barriers to interaction and negatively affects teenagers’ ability to express their emotions and thoughts in real life.

Cyber Bullying

On social media, it gets really easy to be mean. Behind the screens, people often don’t hesitate on making comments that they would never make on someone’s face. This can increase the chances of both – teenagers becoming bullies as well as getting bullied.

Bullying can adversely impact both physiological and physical health, and cyberbullying can be especially damaging. Unlike traditional bullying, cyberbullying isn’t limited to certain places like schools and colleges and known bullies. It can occur 24/7, and since escaping consequences is very easy, the severity of bullying can be far worse on online platforms than offline.

Lower self-esteem

It is no secret that on social media, almost everybody’s life is perfect. Social media platforms are flooded with people with “perfect bodies” and ‘perfect lives. This sets unrealistic expectations in teenagers and negatively affects their self-esteem.

Teenagers today are constantly comparing their bodies and have started validating themselves with the number of likes and comments they are receiving.

In the era of supposedly flawless lives of influencers and YouTubers, the levels of ‘body positivity and self-confidence in teenagers are deteriorating, and so is the overall mental health of youngsters.

Addiction

How many times do you open a social media app and end up spending hours scrolling through the feed and watching random posts? Quite often, correct?

Studies show that both teens and adults are likely to check their phones approximately 150 times a day. This reflects how powerful the draw of social media is. Due to an addiction to online presence, teenagers often end up negatively impacting their real-life relationships. Today, many teenagers find it increasingly difficult to maintain healthy friendships and relationships due to constant distractions and lack of attention.

How to Minimize the Negative Effects Of Social

Media

It may not be possible to avoid social media entirely, but there are specific techniques that you can use to encourage responsible social media usage. By using social media responsibly, teenagers can minimize the negative impacts while taking advantage of the benefits it offers.

Limit Screen Time –

Using social media for entertainment is OK, but if your child is preoccupied with social media almost every hour of the day, it can impair their ability to focus on other tasks. Talk to your teen about setting screen time limits so that they can focus on other activities, sleep, meals and homework. Set an example for your child by switching off electronics at least one hour before bed and following a bedtime routine. If possible, keep phones and tablets out of teens’ bedrooms at night.

Teach social media conduct

Since social media is an inevitable part of forming social relationships these days, you need to have a conversation with your teenager about the appropriate social media conduct. Discourage them from indulging in bullying, spreading rumors, participating in baseless feuds, and damaging someone’s reputation. Teach them what is OK and what is not.

Monitor your teen’s account

Parents often try to invade their kids’ privacy by checking their social media accounts without their knowledge, which is inappropriate. Let your kid know in advance that you will monitor their accounts and explain it for their good.

Encourage social detoxing

This is incredibly beneficial for teenagers and adults alike. Encourage your kids to go outdoors and spend real time with their friends. You can even plan a family weekend getaway where all the family members practice social media detox and use their electronic devices for emergencies only.

]]>
Depression or teen depression is a mental health disorder that hampers your ability to carry out your day-to-day activities such as eating or sleeping and prevents you from leading a stress-free life. Depression affects people of all ages, with its symptoms appearing in teenage years or early 20s and 30s.

Depression is often accompanied by anxiety and stress disorders causing physical health conditions such as diabetes, insomnia, and much more. Depression is a common disorder that often gets ignored and taken lightly. The treatment for depression entails addressing the illness and charting out a therapy plan comprising psychological therapy combined with prescription medicines that target depression and the mental disorders that accompany it.

What is Teen Depression?

Teenage years hit us like a tornado sweeping us away from our sheltered lives to the real world, far from what we have in mind. Along with physical changes, our body goes through mental changes that instill a sensation of feeling intensely and often feeling too much. Feeling irritable or sad as you transition from a kid to adulthood is perfectly normal. But if these feelings intensify or don’t go away, making you overwhelmed, withdrawn, and helpless, you may be suffering from depression.

We label teenagers as angsty and moody due to the hormones surging in their bodies, making them irritable and temporarily sad. Teen Depression is more than just a general feeling of being down in the dumps. It is a severe mental health disorder that affects your attitude, your mood, and even the way you think or function in your daily life.

Several causes may cause depression in teenagers, such as academic pressure, ambiguous future, social pressure, and challenges or hormonal changes. Once one hits puberty, it can get challenging to wrap your head around the duality of life as a kid and now as a teenager. The false belief that depression is a sign of weakness or character flaw is often a misconception we fall prey to. It is important to remember that you are not alone in this fight with a medical illness, and with the right kind of help, you can drastically improve the quality of your life.

What Causes Teen Depression?

There can be several factors that lead to causing depression in teenagers, such as:

 • Nerve receptors in the brain may falter and under produce the ‘happy’ compounds needed for our brain to feel happy and relaxed. Abnormal or impaired production of neurotransmitters such as serotonin or dopamine can lead to depression.
 • The first thing that happens when you enter your teenage years is the hormone imbalance in your body. Fluctuating hormones causing physical changes in a teenager’s body can also trigger or cause depression.
 • Your genes play a pivotal role in defining the physical and mental illnesses that may affect you. Depression is common in people whose blood relatives suffer from the same condition.
 • Traumatic childhood events such as physical or emotional abuse may trigger depressive episodes causing permanent brain changes leading to depression.
 • The first thing one feels when suffering from depression is an intense feeling of helplessness. Depression caused by poor habits can be traced back to learned patterns of negative thinking. This pessimistic view of the world is adapted from the parents who might also suffer from depression. The lack of positive examples on how to overcome challenges in life may lead to anxiety and depression.

What are the Symptoms of Teen Depression?

Teenage depression can appear very different from depression in adults. The common symptoms observed in teenagers suffering from depression are:

 • Mood Swings

Irritability and sadness are an integral part of being a teenager. A depressed teenager may show signs of being hostile, easily frustrated, prone to anger outbursts, and may appear grumpy with sudden mood swings.

 • Aches and Pains

Depressed teenagers complain about physical ailments such as headaches, stomach aches, and muscle aches with unexplained causes. Once a thorough physical exam is conducted, revealing no signs of complications, these aches and pains may indicate depression.

 • Sensitivity to Criticism

Teenagers that suffer from depression go through intense feelings of worthlessness, the hopelessness that may cause extreme vulnerability to criticism, rejection, and failure.

 • Withdrawn attitude

Adult depression causes one to isolate themselves. Teenage depression, on the other hand, makes them withdraw from most people and still maintain some form of relationships and friendships with their friends. It may cause you to switch your crowd-drawing away from your parents and socializing less than before.

How to help a Depressed Teenager?

Depression can trigger chronic illnesses when left untreated, making it crucial to get help in time. Providing your teen with utmost love and care in a non-judgmental way is the key to pave the way for healing. The first step to begin your recovery from depression is to address your behavioral and emotional issues. Listening should be the focus when opening a dialogue with your teen instead of lecturing. Even though the depression symptoms may appear trivial, it is important to resist any urge to criticize or pass judgment once there is an open line of communication. Listening and making them feel heard is the key to gaining your teenager’s trust.

You ought to show your unconditional support yet be persistent at the same time. Even if your initial actions fail to receive positive results, give it time. It can be difficult for teens to open up about depression and other heavy topics. They need time and space before figuring out how to express their feelings. Seek help from a medical health professional, favorite teacher, school counselor – any professional that your teenager may feel comfortable around.

The post How do Kids Understand the Need for Fitness? appeared first on articleocity.

]]>
Expecting a better life for the kid’s future is every parent’s favorite mind time. Especially making them accustomed to eating veggies and fitness in most cases making them adhere to one extreme sport will already be in the imagination. Since kids can’t figure out what shall work out in their favor, parents put forth plenty of activities by making them join on the weekdays. It’s like Playtime rather than showtime!

What’s the general response of the kids towards it? Most of them would love and hop on, and some may show disinterest in outdoor activity as the age of the digital world has done worse things by bringing the games online, And some may dwell in the books!

It’s good that parents think ahead of time about their happiness, healthy lifestyle, and activities but waits, do you know the ultimate goal for your kids yet? It’s time to think from that perspective.

First on the list is to understand the kid’s nature.

We leave our kids to learn in school and never get to focus on how their patterns are. Only a teacher in the school can analyze, but it’s high time the parents understand. Not all of us are alike. And that’s it stands first.

Extrovert kids are more interactive and like to be out with a group of fellas, but introverted kids are solo types fond of playing along with the things, and some are those who are involved with other kids.

So start from knowing them before making a program list for the weekend as the ultimate goal is to keep them active and, of course, loving it.

Now figure out what their interest is!

Need not what the parent’s interest is, be the kid’s interest to continue the legacy. Expecting is bad but letting them have an opinion is to understand them,

Maybe their interest is in dancing. It is not a destructive activity at all. It’s good to think kids have fickle minds, but their interests lie there, and that’s it! Try to explain to them about the list of activities briefly, and if it still points to dancing, then that’s the one!

And those who are fickle-minded, changing interests all the time? Let them be that, after all, the point is to stay running and active.

Throw a look at your priorities too

Yes, it is understandable that the kid’s interest is concerned, but it shall stay positive as long as your commitment towards fulfilling their interest balances with your personal life. When there is distress, it doesn’t keep anybody’s mood alive.

So it doesn’t mean to kill your plans. The point is to balance them and to fuse fitness in their activities. Only when you could make quality- time prioritize everything, the activity program makes sense; otherwise, it certainly disrupts the continuity in the long run and can remain a two-week plan that you wouldn’t want to happen.

You can be the source of inspiration.

Engaging kids need persistent effort. Not just by joining a program but a motivating in-house activity in the family! Allow the kids to experience how it acts rather than just viewing the reels. Teach them your routine exercise to keep them physically active. Often conduct such Playtime in the house! Are you noticing? You are inspiring them! So, it would help if you were involved in the first place to see that in them.

A few thoughts

We are human beings and not robots. They are kids and not a thing. The right of decision-making should always depend on their liking rather than just yours. If it is so, it doesn’t make sense at all about their existence in reality. It’s time to let them be who they can be rather than what you want them to be, and of course, that needs a little push from the parents when they lack behind in the process.

Of course, staying healthy has to be prioritized through the activity as kids wouldn’t understand its importance but make sure they already have the interest to support it. If they don’t have interest in fitness or physical activity, then make them know what is there. And be an inspiration to kids as that itself would make them love an activity.

Would you please not waste it? Set a good example by instilling a love for fitness through exercise and every possible way. Your family should be very active. This attitude will accompany your child for the rest of his life and her child’s life and become a legacy. So, act on imbibing these activities if you don’t already have one, which would turn out to make your life blissful and your followers too towards the change that leads to a healthy lifestyle, and who wouldn’t want it, right? At least after going through the pandemic situations. We want it, no more to struggle, So, start now and enact right now.
